So far, two twin cores were or are (still) required for Fast Ethernet and four twin cores for Gigabit Ethernet.

These previous standards are quickly becoming obsolete as the demand for ever more powerful infrastructures and therefore more cost-efficient solutions in the industrial network sector has constantly been increasing for several years and previous products with two or four twin cores are often no longer sufficient. Consequently, a solution has been developed allowing a significant reduction in the required cable infrastructure and opening up new options for data communication in industrial environments.

We are talking about Single Pair Ethernet (SPE).  The use of SPE not only reduces the space required and the weight of the cabling, but allows simpler and more powerful data communication in certain application areas as well. SPE is seen as a key infrastructure for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), as it enables efficient and cost-effective networking of devices and systems in industry.
